Kitchen Puns: a collection of foody greeting cards that will make your dad laugh out loud.
Sometimes we communicate seriously and with gravitas. And sometimes, a pun is the only way. My goal was to create a collection of such greeting cards for those special occasions when only a pun will do.
Four food punny cards on a kitchen shelf. One turns to the other and says "sure smells good in here." And the other says, "oh my gosh, a talking card!"
Color
I worked from a limited color palette so the cards would have a cohesive feel, in addition to subject matter. I wanted the cards to be punny, obviously, but also fun and bright. Something that would bring a smile to your face (or your dad's face). I tied the collection together with a watercolor background with paint splatter.

Big Dill and Jelly greeting cards, sweet and salty celebrations!
Lettering and Illustration
Lettering and illustration style were kept bold and bright, so the puns could shine through.

I sketched and illustrated in Fresco on my iPad and finalized and then mocked up the cards in Photoshop. I use grids to help figure out the lettering lockups before inking.

Jelly Beans are the only way to say I love you and I miss you. Prove me wrong.
What do you bring someone who's sick? A pot of soup. Soup is serious business, and the highest compliment.
Coffee is great, but have you tried tea?
Nothing says "I care about your thoughts and feelings" like carbs.
Thanks so much for checking out my punny kitchen cards! I hope you had a good chuckle, or at least enjoyed looking at my pasta drawings.
